Base Channel Installation – Key Tips for Contractors
A properly installed base channel is essential for the safety and longevity of any frameless glass balustrade. Even premium hardware will fail if the channel is not fixed correctly. Qingdao Railing‑O Metal Product Co., Ltd. (Railing‑O) offers these core tips to help ensure a smooth, durable installation.
Start with the substrate. The mounting surface must be level and clean. Any unevenness will transfer stress to the glass panel, increasing the risk of cracks. If the floor is not flat, use shims or a self‑levelling compound before fixing the channel.
Select anchors that match both the substrate and the channel material. For concrete, use stainless steel expansion or resin anchors; for steel structures, use through‑bolts. Always choose Grade 304 or 316 stainless steel anchors to prevent galvanic corrosion. Never mix different metals.
For outdoor or poolside projects, make sure the channel has drainage holes at its lowest points. Standing water inside the channel accelerates corrosion and, in cold climates, can freeze and crack the glass or channel itself.
When inserting the glass, always place EPDM rubber gaskets or setting blocks inside the channel. This prevents direct glass‑to‑metal contact, allowing for thermal expansion and avoiding stress points. Use suction lifters to handle the glass and centre it carefully within the channel.
Finally, fill the channel with a high‑quality structural silicone sealant, applying it evenly to at least two‑thirds of the glass edge height. Allow the sealant to fully cure before applying any load to the balustrade. After installation, double‑check all anchor torques and ensure the glass is perfectly plumb.
